Does anyone know if Branston reduced sugar/salt beans are gluten free?  Nothing on the tin, though there is the suspicious word 'flavourings'.

Thanks

Hi Marjory, having read your post I have sent an e-mail to one of the managers at Branston. The company is run from South Africa as far as I can find out.

I have asked if the foods they produce could have labels if they are suitable for Coeliac sufferers as reading all the labels before you buy is very time consumming.I have also asked your question as I am sure there are many bean eaters amongst us. In the meantime here is a baked bean war going on......Tesco BB in t.sauce are, vegie, lowgi, source of fibre. Cal 140,sugar 11.8,fat 1.1g, saturates 0.3g,salt 1.9g 31%

I will post any reply I receive.

Thanks again Jack.  Where would we be without you.

The reason I asked was I was in some pain at the weekend and I was trying to work out what it was that I ate.  The only thing I was unsure of was the beans and some very dark chocolate.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Branston.  I waited two weeks for an e-mail from sainsburys - though they did apologise for the delay.

Bye for now.

Hi Marjory

Im a newbie at this coeliac business too but according to the Coeliac UK gluten-free directory both Branston Beans & Branston Healthy beans are listed as being safe to eat.  if you have the 2007 copy of the directory its on page 160.  If you havent got a copy, register with Coeliac Uk & get one, Ive found it invaluable!  You have to be careful with chocolate, especially brands which include biscuit versions in their product line.  Green & Blacks tend to be ok (apart from the mint fondant bar) & Lidl do an excellent 75% cocoa bar (Trinidad?) which is gluten-free & absolutely gorgeous!!

Hope this helps!

Hi Marjory, we shall have to wait and see about the response to my questions. Chocolate can also contain gluten, they put the stuff in any thing just to bulk it up. My wife has become very conscienous of what she is buying and has admitted that she is eating healthier these days. It is a shame the coeliac consumer has to spend so long reading labels. We bought some ginger cake on a free from counter having eaten it it gave me problems. Yes it was free from some but not all of the main four. Yes it is still on the free from counter. The tesco baked beans came out top of the list as best.

I have found that since being diagnosed there is a lot of support out there, once family and friends know your problem they ask what you can have. Cafe's & restaurants once you have asked for gluten free foods they are very helpful, still to try oriental etc. Supermarket staff I have found helpful but can only advise where the areas of food are for us.

Have you looked on the Doves farm website...........includes christmas cake. I have tried many people on the dietaryspecials victoria sponge and they loved it, I now prefer it to chocolate.

I have a book from ceoliac uk and it lists all the things that you can eat. it states in there that the Branton baked beans in tomato sauce 220g and 420 grams are ok. also Heinze B/b are labeled GF as are their beans and sausages, hope this helps.     Tweety pie
