| My husband and I have been trying for a baby for 5 years, in this time I have become pregnant twice, both resulting in miscarriages. My consultant thinks I may have coeliac disease given some of my other symptoms which include: loose stools, joint pain, headaches, gastritis, bloating, abdominal pain, excema and mouth ulcers to name but a few! My GP arranged the blood test which came back today as negative, she has refused me the biopsy test and won't prescribe me gluten free food although she says that I may have a gluten intolerance rather than the allergy! I am holding out to see my consultant in June to see if he will agree to the biopsy test. Should I see another Doctor at my surgery as I feel like she is blocking my chance to have a child and to feel healthy? |

| Were you eating sufficient gluten when you gave the sample for the blood test. If this was an anti-body test against gliadin then it will be negative unless you are eating gluten prior to the test. Many Dr's seem not to realise this ... the biopsy will likely be the same....you must be eating gluten to be diagnosed by either antibodies or biopsy! |

| | Antibodies alone can be insufficient for diagnostic purposes because a small number of people with CD have an associated deficiency of immunoglobulins making this method of screening less than 100% accurate. Your symptoms could just be due to IBS but we should not assume that. If your symptoms are persistent and seem to reflect a sensitivity to gluten, a gastro-enterologist's opinon on having a biopsy seems reasonable to me. |

| | Thank you for this advice. I am hopefull that my infertility consultant will agree to me having the biopsy and that in due course a gluten free diet will improve my general well being and allow me to have a successfull pregnancy. |

| Hi there I do understand and know exactly what you are going through, myself being undetected as a coeliac for 8 years during this time I was trying to conceive naturally and with private IVF. It is now apparent that not absorbing all the sufficient nutrients has probably caused me to be infertile, but you know what, now that I have been on a g/f diet for 2 years my body has slowly returned to normal and I now have regular 28 day cycles which was unheard of before. At 39, 40 this year, I still haven't given up hope and feel that now that I have a diagnosis, I may fall naturally. Be strong, and be persistent, and dont give up hope... all the best Sara |
