Dear Sarah,

My 9 year old daughter has suffered for years from stomach cramps and i have long suspected it might be food related.  She only has diarrhoea occasionally however, do you think she could be gluten intolerant?  I haven't tried cutting it out purely because of the hassle of finding a replacement for breakfast cereal and toast!

many thanks

Yes it could be and it needs to be diagnosed one way or the other. People always talk about the classic symptoms of coeliac disease but we know now many more people suffer silently, in other words they appear to have other symptoms that don't match the usual ones or are even symptom free. This doesn't mean that coeliac disease is any less serious in those people. You need to seek advice from your GP for a specialist referral.
