i take multi-vits, zinc & calcium tablets but still don't feel any benefit from them.  How long does it generally take for a person's body to start absorbing vitamins again after sticking to a GF diet (been on mine for 1.5 years)?

Hi Morag

The cells of the gut heal pretty quickly so you should not have a problem absorbing vitamins and minerals if you have been following your gluten free diet for some time now. You cannot always feel the benefits of taking vitamin and mineral supplements, they work silently to prevent deficiencies and symptoms of ill health. A sense of improved well being comes from eating a healthy balanced diet (and regular exercise) so don't just rely on supplements. Make sure you are eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, lean sources of protein like red meat, chicken or pulses, plus some oily fish and low fat dairy products to supply calcium. Make gluten free and non-gluten carbohydrate foods such as gluten free pasta, breads as well as rice and potatoes the basis of meals to give you plenty of energy.
